How it works

The Assessment process

At The Spectrum Clinic, we aim to make our assessment process clear, thorough, and as comfortable as possible for both adults and children. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect when you enquire about an assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or both.

Enquiry or Direct Booking

When you're ready to start, you can skip the queue and book your first session directly through our website. This is the quickest and most efficient way to book your assessment without waiting for a callback or back-and-forth emails. Booking online allows you to secure an appointment at your convenience, ensuring that you receive an outcome sooner rather than later.

For those who prefer an initial conversation, one of our team will still get in touch if you enquire, to walk you through what to expect during the assessment.

Questionnaires

Once your session is booked, you'll be sent questionnaires to complete. These are designed to gather key information about you or your child’s experiences and symptoms. You'll also be able to provide questionnaires to an informant (someone who knows the patient well), like a family member, friend, or teacher, to help us gain additional insight.

Observation (for autism assessments)

For Autism Assessments, an ADOS-informed observation is conducted, lasting up to 60 minutes. This helps us evaluate social and communication skills relevant to autism. This step is not required for ADHD assessments.

Assessment

For ADHD Assessments, a mental health/psychological assessment of around 60 minutes is conducted. This session is key to identifying ADHD symptoms and their impact on everyday life.

Interview

For Autism Assessments, a Developmental History Interview lasting approximately 120 minutes is conducted. This focuses on developmental milestones and early-life experiences, providing crucial context for an accurate diagnosis.

For ADHD Assessments, a DIVA interview of 90-120 minutes is carried out. This structured interview dives into ADHD symptoms and their impact on different areas of life, such as school, work, or relationships.

Computerised Assessment (for ADHD Assessments)

For ADHD Assessments, you’ll also complete a computerised assessment of symptoms (QbCheck). This 15-20 minute test provides objective data on attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

Feedback Session

Once the assessments are complete, you will have a feedback session lasting up to 30 minutes. Here, we'll discuss the findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations for support. We aim to ensure that you leave with clarity on the next steps.

Outcome Letter

Within 48 hours of your feedback session, you'll receive an outcome letter summarising the results of the assessment. This provides a quick and clear summary that can be used for school, work, or further medical consultations.

Final Report

You will receive a final report within 4 - 8 weeks of the initial session, depending on the type of assessment (single or combined). This comprehensive report includes the diagnosis and personalised recommendations to help manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. For children, it may include guidance for schools, while for adults, the focus may be on strategies for work and home life.
