Adult Autism Assessment

At The Spectrum Clinic, we specialise in thorough and comprehensive assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults. Many adults come to us seeking to better understand themselves, often after years of feeling different or struggling in social situations. Autism is often recognised in childhood, but for many, especially those diagnosed later in life, the signs may have been misunderstood or overlooked. Whether you have a family and a career or are simply seeking answers, we are here to help.

Why Choose The Spectrum Clinic?

Our assessments are carried out by a small, dedicated team of highly experienced and accredited clinical psychologists and HCPC registered clinicians. We adhere to the latest NICE/NHS guidelines, ensuring that each assessment is conducted to the highest standards. Each clinician is also well-versed in a wide range of mental health conditions, giving you the assurance that your journey with us will be handled professionally and with complete confidentiality.

We pride ourselves on our comprehensive and compassionate approach, where every individual’s story is heard and valued. Whether you are navigating difficulties in communication or other social challenges, we aim to offer clarity, understanding, and support in your diagnosis journey.

The Adult Autism Assessment Process

Our adult autism assessment is designed to be as thorough and detailed as possible, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and recommendations tailored to your needs. The process consists of several key steps:

  1. Initial Questionnaires
    • After booking, you will receive questionnaires to complete. These cover your medical history, family background, and the difficulties you are experiencing.
    • If possible, we also ask for input from someone who knows you well, although this step is optional if you prefer not to involve anyone else.
  2. ADOS-Informed Observation (approximately 60 minutes):
    • The ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) informed session involves structured observation, designed to assess social and communication skills.
  3. Developmental History Interview (approximately 120 minutes):
    • A comprehensive interview with one of our clinicians to gather detailed information about your personal development from childhood to adulthood.
  4. Multi-Clinician Review:
    • Two of our clinicians will carefully review all the gathered evidence, including questionnaires and observation results, to determine if you meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  5. Feedback Session (about 30 minutes):
    • You will be invited to a feedback session where we will share the diagnostic conclusion, discuss recommendations, and answer any questions you may have.
  6. Outcome and Report:
    • You will receive an outcome letter within 48 working hours of the feedback session.
    • A comprehensive final report will be delivered within four weeks of your last session, outlining the results and our recommended next steps.
